Hemphill this weekend

Hemphill is one of my favorite local galleries, and this weekend they're opening two new shows, During the Wet, Aboriginal Bark Paintings from Western Arnhem Land, Maningrida and Robin Rose, Endeavor.

From the release:

For thousands of years the Aboriginal communities in Australia's Western Arnhem Land have actively pursued a variety of artistic endeavors, including rock painting, bark painting and elaborate weavings. The bark paintings featured in During the Wet (right) are by a group of artists from the Maningrida community, most of whom have never exhibited in the United States.

Endeavor, an exhibition of new encaustic paintings by Robin Rose, is as much about the process and labors of making a thing as it is about the final product. Reflecting on explorer James Cook, whose ship was called The Endeavour, Robin Rose feels the importance of seeing his process through to the very end. The result is a cohesive body of paintings.

Exhibition: April 4–May 30
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 4 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and by appointment.
