Big Papi En Fuego Hot Sauce

Great/interesting things often come across my desk. I've received beer, cupcakes, false eyelashes, a light up tiara, and a Proust comic book, all in the name of journalism. Last week I received four bottles of Big Papi En Fuego Hot Sauce made by Red Sox player David Ortiz, who apparently is a hot sauce enthusiast.

Longtime readers know that I love baseball, and I obviously love food, so this intersection, (much like the Cooperstown Cookie Company), is great. But it's even better because Papi is one of my favorite baseball players. I've only opened the mildest bottle (It's a single!) and haven't yet tried "Monster Double," "Off the Wall Triple" or "Grand Slam," but it's been useful to keep at my desk. So far I've swirled it into hummus and drizzled it on a burger, to excellent results.

The tag line — "Not just a hot sauce, it's a lifestyle!!! En Fuego goes with everything, from food to drinks to cooking ingredient - it's a way of life" — is kind of inexplicable, but who cares. Sales benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, and you can find bottles at stores in New England and online here.

Calling Red Sox Fans

I have yet to attend one of these, but does any D.C. Red Sox fan want to come to a meet up on May 5 at the Hawk 'n Dove to watch the Sox play the Yankees? Check out the group here, and send me a message if you'd like to join.

Nats Opening Day!

Today is the Nationals home opener, for those who follow the seemingly hopeless team. But baseball season also means the return of spring, and now it also means cookies.

A couple weeks ago, the Cooperstown Cookie Company sent me some of their shortbread baseball cookies, and the cute and buttery cookies would be perfect for baseball themed parties, You can boxes decorated with the logo of any team (I got Red Sox shortbread and Nationals chocolate chip shortbread), but apparently the Yankees and Phillies have been the most popular so far. Order cookies here.

PSA: The Red Sox are coming to town next season to play the Nationals. June 23-25.

And let's hope they're the defending World Champion Red Sox.

Red Sox in D.C.

The Red Sox were at the White House yesterday (just one honor bestowed on the team that wins the World Series). How did I miss this? I found out via the D.C. Red Sox group I belong to, which sounds like it's going to have a lot of meet-ups this season, in case any Sox fans are looking for people to watch the game with. I know I need a few more Boston sports friends in the area.

Ben's at the Nationals

Today's really exciting news — there will be a Ben's Chili Bowl outpost at the new Nationals stadium. The Nationals don't play the Red Sox at all, and I'm sure there will be ridiculously long lines, but this is welcome news.

Edit: DCist is more informed than the Post and says it isn't a done deal.

Red Sox Roundup

Some of today's articles about the Sox World Series win:

• A baby giraffe born October 24 at Zoo New England has been named Sox, in honor of the sweep last night. This is cute, but it's no baby panda. And it's definitely no baby polar bear.

• Slate explains why the Red Sox are not called the Red Socks.

• If you bought furniture from Jordan's in Boston back in April, it's now free.

• Apparently Ortiz is the real party boy.

• Jon Lester is my age, a cancer survivor, and last night's winning pitcher.

• Red Sox fans are an emotional bunch.

And it's not an article, but Southwest sent me three free credits because the hometown team won. Here's to never changing my residency.

Gloating

The Red Sox won their first division title in 12 years last night!

Now I just need to find a bar and friends to watch the playoffs with.
