Polar Obsession

The National Geographic Museum has, in my opinion, some of the best photography shows in the city. Sure, I loved shows like William Eggleston at the Corcoran, which just closed, but the photographs of the natural world you can find at the Museum are amazing.

A new show, Polar Obsession, with 60 images of the world's polar regions by Paul Nicklen, goes on display today. Nicklen grew up in an Inuit community in the Canadian Arctic, where he developed an interest in the animals you can find there, like seals, whales, walruses, polar bears, narwhals and penguins. Today he travels around the world to photograph polar wildlife. The exhibition comes from his new book of the same name, which comes out in November. Nicklen will be speaking at the Museum on November 11.

I'm currently reading a book entitled Cold: Adventures in the World's Frozen Places, by Bill Streever. Fascinating stuff.
