Upcoming Events at the National Portrait Gallery

These events both sound great.

A Conversation with Nikki Giovanni
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 7 p.m.

In conjunction with the exhibition RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture, poet Nikki Giovanni will be interviewed by playwright Jennifer L. Nelson about her life and work as a poet. Swift to My Wounded
Monday, Oct. 20, 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Walt Whitman lived and worked in Washington from 1863 to 1873 and Bill Largess brings Whitman to life through the poet’s journals and poetry. Whitman cared for the sick and injured Union soldiers during the Civil War in the building where the Portrait Gallery is now housed. The performance is at the National Theatre, Helen Hayes Gallery, 1321 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Seating is limited and tickets are required and are distributed one half-hour prior to performance, on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 202-783-3372.
