Accommodating Nature: The Photographs of Frank Gohlke

Accommodating Nature: The Photographs of Frank Gohlke opens tomorrow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. I saw it this week, and it's a terrific foil to the Ansel Adams photographs currently on display as part of the Natural Affinities exhibit, which includes paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe.

Golhke takes photographs in Texas, Queens, Mount St. Helens and Massachusetts. His photographs, mostly in black and white, are quiet but pack a punch — he shoots both destruction and idyll, and each is a stripped down, yet elegant image.
